Episode 163: Plot Armor in RPGs, Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene
Saturday Aug 14, 2021
Saturday Aug 14, 2021
Jolene was watching Youtube videos and a discussion about Plot Armor got her attention. Jolene asked Saul about it and the result is this episode. What is "Plot Armor", hint it is a real thing outside of RPGs? How is it used in RPGs. Saul and Jolene discuss "plot armor" in RPGs. As usual Saul's stance is sort of set in stone while Jolene's tac is a bit more reasonable.
A listener posted a comment on a podcatcher that Jolene was looking at and they had a fine idea about the naming of the episodes. The comment was how when our show is listed it usually cuts off the name of the actual episode. So we decided it was prudent to put the name of the episode first and then the name of the podcast. That way you know what the episode is about as you look at our episode list. Thanks to that listener, great idea.

Episode 162: Is the GM a Player? Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
In this episode Saul and Jolene discuss if the GM is a Player in the game that the GM is running. Saul believes that the GM certainly is while Jolene completely disagrees.
The two hosts go back and forth and neither is able to convince, totally, the other's perspective.
We have decided to change how we name the episodes. Because the title of our podcast is very long many times the title of the episode is not seen on various podcatcher APs. So we decided to put the name of the episode first then the podcast name. Other than that no changes.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 161: Space Opera RPG
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Saul and Jolene went on a family vacation and Saul was unable to edit last weeks episode on time. To make up for that Saul decided to talk about his Favorite RPG of all time or as he stated "one of the Top 3 RPGs" on his favorites list.
If you listen to this podcast with any regularity Saul brings up Space Opera RPG from Fantasy Games Unlimited as Jolene's says, "ALL THE TIME". So Saul decided to spend as much time as Jolene would allow for Saul to "review" Space Opera.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 160: Homebrew Games
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
Wednesday Jul 14, 2021
This episode is about Homebrew games. What is Homebrew. Should you do it. Who should you admit that you have a "Homebrew" game. Can you get a shot to take care of this problem?
Saul as usual goes way off the rails on this topic, and Jolene on multiple occasions has to wrangle Saul back to the topic. This time Saul was in a bit of a tangent mood though.
Thanks for listening.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode159: Describing Your Game Con Game.
Wednesday Jul 07, 2021
Wednesday Jul 07, 2021
The topic for this episode was found by Jolene when she was looking at Game Hole Con's Facebook post which asked about how to go about describing their game for an upcoming Game Hole gaming convention. It was from a GM that had run games previously at Game Hole Con but they noticed a slightly different worded policy about adult content games.
So we decide to talk about how to describe your game for a game convention and possibly your friends.
Now that large gathering are started to be permitted in Cities across the U.S. and people are feeling safer due to their precautions and the widely available vaccines, people are going back to Game Cons. One of the first and largest is Game Hole Con in Madison Wisconsin taking place on October 21-24th 2021.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 158: The Bait and Switch
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
Sunday Jun 27, 2021
Saul and Jolene discuss the Bait and Switch game. It is when you, as the GM, present a game of a genre, a type a particular setting or even a system, but when the players sit down to play, you switch it up on the players and try to run something other than presented. Saul discusses an idea with some fellow GM's and they inform Saul that its a bad idea and say its a "Bait and Switch" game. Saul was thinking it was just a way to surprise the players and didn't think he was baiting and switching players. Still he didn't run the game and years later still thinks he wants to try it but present more information about the game he wants to run.
Saul and Jolene ran what they call the "Big D&D Game at DunDraCon" where they ran 3 tables of 6 players using 5th Edition rules. Each table was a different genre but they were all connected by an over arching storyline. Saul and Jolene discuss whether that was a bait and switch game.

Gaming Perspectives With Saul and Jolene Episode 157: Why Play RPGs?
Monday Jun 21, 2021
Monday Jun 21, 2021
In this Episode Saul and Jolene discuss why play rpgs. Many people who have never played an RPG don't have a clue as to what roleplaying is all about. Usually they know about many misconceptions and stereotypes which Saul concedes might have been somewhat true in the 1980's but is now no longer valid. Even in the 70's and 80's those stereotypes only matched a small percentage of the gamer population.
Saul and Jolene actually argue against those stereotypes and discuss how playing games, especially RPGs can help people socialize and promote positive social interactions. Their experience with their son, their friend's kids and kids they have met at gaming conventions, demonstrate how RPGs and help kids socialize, learn critical thinking, consequences for actions and use their imagination in very creative ways.

Skill checks can become too monotonous. GM's often cringe when a PC fails a skill check to hear another player saying "I will check too." with the sound of rolling dice.
Saul discusses with Jolene how he thinks that use of "Skills" can be made more fun and even more exciting by implementing a few ideas to your gaming style.
