Gaming Perspectives With Saul and Jolene Episode 79: Journals in RPGs
Saturday Dec 14, 2019
Saturday Dec 14, 2019
Saul and Jolene asked the Webosphere, if there were any topics they wanted covered by the podcast. One topic was posted on the Gaming Perspectives Facebook page was journals. Now Saul didn't have an exact idea what the poster, Michael, exactly meant by "journals" but that didn't stop Saul from answering the question anyway.
As always Jolene was had to corral Saul from meandering too far from the subject. Saul and Jolene discussed how journals or diaries could be used in roleplaying games. Players and GM's writing session notes, character journals/diaries and even campaign notes seemed like a good idea to Saul and Jolene. Saul and Jolene discuss how both GM and Players could use their journals for in game and out of game purposes.
As always, we would like to thank all of you that listen to our podcast and all we ask is that you share our podcast with friends and family.

Almost every RPG gamer knows about Metagaming. In the current era, metagaming is considered the ban of any "true" roleplayer. With a little research and thinking about the subject Jolene found that not all metagaming is bad? What thought Saul, what are you doing challenging something that all gamers now hold has the "truth" that all metagaming is bad.
Jolene discusses how in some instances and situations, metagaming isn't terrible or horrible. Well I guess an old dog CAN learn new tricks and so in this episode Saul learns something new.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 77: Women at the Gaming Table.
Saturday Nov 30, 2019
Saturday Nov 30, 2019
Saul and Jolene discuss Women at the Gaming Table. Here Saul relates how growing up there were no girls or women at his gaming table. Even when Saul went to his first gaming convention women were very few. It was not until the 1995 that he was in a gaming group that had not one but two women.
Jolene starting gaming because of her younger brother. But then they moved to a new town of Chico California and the guys that her brother started playing with were a bit "intimidated" by Jolene's presence. Still Jolene has been attending game conventions since 2000 and describes her experience going to local conventions.
Even with more women at conventions and playing games, too many times we read and hear stories about women having bad experiences at gaming tables. Saul and Jolene talk about why this might happen and how they feel things will change for women and all people who start playing rpg games.
Sorry no intro music in this episode.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 76: King Arthur Pendragon RPG
Saturday Nov 23, 2019
Saturday Nov 23, 2019
In this Episode Saul and Jolene talk about a RPG that goes back to 1985, King Arthur Pendragon. Since it debut in 1985 with a box set it has seen a few editions, the latest being Pendragon 5.2. Saul and Jolene are interested in this game but each for different reasons. Saul owes liking and playing D&D back in 1978 to the King Arthur stories. From books he read to a Disney Cartoon movie called Sword in the Stone. Later movies like Excalibur, First Knight and others. Saul discusses how King Arthur Pendragon, KAP for short, is much different from the more well known Dungeons and Dragon.
Jolene comes from a more historical angle and why she likes that period of history and sees KAP as a way of playing in mythical England of ladies and knights. With Jolene's background in Ancient and Medieval history and her fondness of historical romance novels Jolene is fascinated by the Pendragon rpg.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 75: D&D is Not a RPG
Sunday Nov 17, 2019
Sunday Nov 17, 2019
A while back John Wick, no not the Keanu John Wick, the creator of 7th Seas RPG and others, stated in his blog that Dungeons and Dragons was not a Role playing game. Saul brought this up to Jolene and the following discussion was had.
What did John Wick mean that D&D wasn't and RPG? Millions of people have been playing D&D and they have been thinking, believing and knowing that they were playing an RPG. Saul and Jolene discuss this and figure out what motivations or reasons why anyone, especially John Wick would say such a ludicrous statement.

Gaming Perspectives With Saul and Jolene Episode 74: The Year Zero System
Saturday Nov 09, 2019
Saturday Nov 09, 2019
In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about the new RPG engine by Free League they are calling the Year Zero Engine. It is the system that was introduced in Mutant Year Zero RPG and was used in the subsequent other publications. This New Zero system was tweaked and used in Coriolis, Tales From the Loop and Forbidden Lands RPGs.
Free League decided to streamline the rules, clean them up and publish them as an Open Gaming License publication. Meaning that you can under certain circumstances use the system and publish your own content.
Saul and Jolene talk about the previous incarnations of the Year Zero system used previous games and how it has been changed from the system in Mutant Year Zero to the Alien RPG. They talk about how it has been tweaked and streamlined with each publication. Saul was particularly impressed with the ease of use and how easy it is to explain the rules to new players.
Saul has run a few games at gaming conventions and it has been the only set of rule system that he has felt comfortable enough to make characters at a convention, which went very well.
Saul and Jolene also discuss how they are involving the gaming community to fine tune the system by putting out the Year Zero document and asking the gaming community for any mistakes or changes they see or want.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 73: The GMPC
Saturday Nov 02, 2019
Saturday Nov 02, 2019
Saul and Jolene discuss the GMPC, the game master player character. Saul saw a poll on social media about how often should a GM use a GMPC. All the possible answers varied from always, sometimes, and use only infrequently. Saul was surprised to see of those that replied that a vast number of people said it was totally okay to do. They all had their "reasons" for using a GMPC. Jolene was a bit puzzled by the topic Saul presented so she used her research skills and found some pretty funny anecdotes on the subject.
Saul definitely has his opinions on the subject. Saul ticks off the reasons people use a GMPC and then has reasons why this might be a bad idea.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 72: The Evolution of the Game Store
Saturday Oct 26, 2019
Saturday Oct 26, 2019
Hobby Game Stores have evolved from the small mom and pop store of the 1970's and 80's. Saul and Jolene discuss how they have had to evolve from those small hobby shop game stores that have mainly gone the way of the dinosaurs. In today's small profit margins and competition from online sales they can't, like other retail establishments, do business the same old way.
Saul relates the two old style hobby game stores from when he was a kid. Neither one of those two stores remain, but instead we have bigger and more inviting game store that have to be that way to remain in business.
Saul and Jolene discuss the changes that are made by successful game stores, the three that they patronize follow the model of being a center for the gaming community. From having nice clean, well lit places to play to some offering cafe and bars in their establishments. A long way from the old hobby store that had stacks of Avalon wargames and badly organized rpg books thrown haphazardly on a few shelves.
Saul and Jolene talk about several game stores they like and Saul found one that is seemingly not shedding the non engaging store owner more interesting in talking with his friends than possible customers.

After the interview with Mark Schynert where he mentioned Arduin Grimoire, Saul got many questions on social media about Mark Schynert's involvement with Arduin Grimoire and its creator David Hargrave. Saul and Jolene decided to invite him back to the microphone to talk exclusively about Arduin and creator Dave Hargrave. David passed away in 1988 while he was working on his beloved Arduin Grimoire RPG game. Those that knew and played with David decided to publish as a tribute of sorts.
Mark volunteered to edit the mass amount of material that David had written. This was no easy endeavor as David wrote more than could be published in two volumes. It is an amazing commitment to an friend to do the work that needed to be done to get the last incarnation of Dave's Arduin rpg game published. In 1992 the Opus for Dave Hargrave's Arduin was published.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 71: Alien RPG
Sunday Oct 20, 2019
Sunday Oct 20, 2019
In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about the upcoming Alien RPG by Free League, the creators of Mutant Year Zero, Tales From the Loop and others. Saul got the Cinematic Starter Kit which is a 173 page PDF that contains all the rules to run an Alien one-shot. From the rules, adventure and pregen characters this PDF contains everything to run a 4-5 hour session.
Saul really liked the game, from the simple system, the "Stress" and "Panic" mechanic and the adventure. Even the character sheet got high marks from Saul. Jolene really liked the game, played in one session and saw another session which was run at a local game con.
At both session the game was well received and everyone really thought the system and the setting really worked. If you pre-ordered the book you should get it in late November in Europe or early December in the U.S. Shortly there after you should see it in game stores.
If you plan on playing in the adventure in the Cinematic Starter Kit. There are SPOILERS of a sort, but nothing too specific and it is called "Alien" rpg.
