Gaming Perspectives With Saul and Jolene Episode 90: Boardgame Civility
Sunday Mar 01, 2020
Sunday Mar 01, 2020
Civility is boardgames. What is more important your friendship or "WINNING"! Saul and Jolene talk about boardgame civility, at home, at tournaments or conventions. What games don't make it to the table because there is too much player interaction. Backstabbing element in the game? Better make sure all your players can handle it.
Saul and Jolene talk about a question a listener had on if it was okay to block someone from getting to a city in a Ticket to Ride boardgame?
Or in Carcassone, adding a tile to a castle claimed by another player to make it more difficult for that play to finish and score more points?
Saul and Jolene have friends that like to play very contentious games and others who don't.
Ticket to Ride is available anywhere, even Target
Carcassone is a great easy to learn tile laying game available anywhere they sell hobby games.

In this Episode Saul and Jolene talk to Brandon Raasch of BARD Games. Currently Brandon has a Kickstarter for the boardgame The Lost Worlds of Josh Kirby. This is the second time we have had the pleasure of talking to Brandon while he has had a live KS campagin.
In this episode Brandon talks about his new game The Lost Worlds of Josh Kirby and the interesting finds the Josh Kirby estate has found looking previously unpublished art for the game. An interesting find were letters written to Josh Kirby by Ray Bradbury, which is a pretty significant find to any fan of either artist.
With the great art and a great gamer's game The Lost Worlds of Josh Kirby is a great game to add to any gamer's library.

Saul and Jolene went to Dundracon 44 in San Ramon California over the President's Day weekend. On Saturday they recorded at DDC and had two people join them on the microphone one was the much mentioned Felipe, Saul's older brother, and Phil, Saul's long time friend and fellow gamer. Felipe is the older brother that got Saul started on his lifetime love of hobby gaming with the introduction of Original D&D in 1978. Phil, Saul met in a high school Geometry class, but didn't game with him until Saul returned from college and was re-introduced to Phil by Jim, a fellow friend and gamer.
This episode is lightly edited and does have substantial background noise of a gaming convention in full swing, even while recording in a "quiet" hall, on a Saturday morning.
Some of the recording was lost due to the use of new equipment but that loss of recording was minimal.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 88: Magic and Society
Saturday Feb 15, 2020
Saturday Feb 15, 2020
Saul and Jolene take a premise of an earlier topic of magic altering structures in a fantasy world and discuss how "Magic" would impact society as a whole. What would be different? How would they be different? What might stay the same.
As usual the conversation runs from books to movies and even some talk about Roman civilization and how they dealt with who lead the Roman Empire, or more importantly what they did to stay in power.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 87: D&D an Ambassador for All RPGs?
Saturday Feb 08, 2020
Saturday Feb 08, 2020
In this episode Saul and Jolene discuss whether Dungeons and Dragons is an ambassador for all RPGs and if that is a good or bad thing. This topic came from a discussion from another RPG podcast called Fear the Boot where one member shared is dislike that when the subject of RPGs comes up with people who don't play, a lot of them think D&D is the only RPG. He is a big SF fan and was dismayed by this. Then he commented Critical Role fueled this misconception as they decided to stream their RPG actual play and their game was D&D.
As usual Saul meanders his way through the topic going on tangents, to which Jolene had to bring his back to the topic at hand.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 86: Dark Conspiracy RPG
Sunday Feb 02, 2020
Sunday Feb 02, 2020
This week Saul and Jolene talk about one of Saul's favorite old rpgs called Dark Conspiracy. It is a game of "near future horror roleplaying game. Published in 1991 Dark Conspiracy called DC by fans first caught the eye of Saul way back in 1991 at a B. Dalton's Bookstore in the local mall. From the cover and the story line that intrigued Saul, he kept going back to that store and finally bought the book after three months of thinking about it.
Saul ran two campaigns of DC. One for the old friends which he started playing RPGs with in Salinas and the second with new friends he made in San Jose when Saul and Jolene decided to attend San Jose State University.
Saul usually doesn't like the horror genre but it was the ability to take out aliens, creatures, demons with high powered firearms that clicked with Saul. DC has been out of print for many years but a committed group of fans have kept DC from disappearing into obscurity. Many things have prevented from a new edition of DC to be published. It might be as Saul said, some sinister Dark Conspiracy might be preventing the truth from coming out.

Gaming Perspectives With Saul and Jolene Episode 85: Do Skills Kill RP
Sunday Jan 26, 2020
Sunday Jan 26, 2020
In this episode Saul and Jolene talk about skill in rpg and whether they diminish RP. Saul uses the "Sense Motive" skill or similar one as an example of how a skill might kill roleplaying. In the example the GM playing an merchant NPC tells the player something. The player then rolls a Sense Motive skill, is successful and tells the GM that he knows if the merchant is lying. By passing any roleplaying.
Saul and Jolene discuss games that have skills and those that don't. New games and old all in trying to figure out if Skills in RPGs really kill roleplay possibilities.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 84: Gamer Expectations
Saturday Jan 18, 2020
Saturday Jan 18, 2020
In this episode Saul and Jolene begin a discussion about gamer expectations from the player and GM point of view. The discussion is about how gamer's expectations about a game they are playing in might change and how these changes might impact the fun at your game table.
Saul and Jolene talk about their Shadowrun game they are currently playing and how certain game sessions can change even within the same game system. Jolene relates how she enjoyed a particularly heavy RP session of Shadowrun about getting information about their next run. But the next session, which was about executing their plan, she didn't have as much fun as the previous RP heavy session.
So listen as Saul and Jolene take a meandering stab at avoiding problem with differences in expectations between players and GMs.

Gaming Perspectives with Saul and Jolene Episode 83: Why Another Edition?
Saturday Jan 11, 2020
Saturday Jan 11, 2020
In this episode Saul and Jolene discuss the question every gamer hears from their significant other, "Why Another Edition?" You already have that roleplaying game. Its crazy that you have multiple RPGs of the same genre but another edition of the same game? That's Crazy!!!
Now Saul and Jolene won't argue that it isn't crazy but there are reasons why a gamer would want yet "another edition" of a certain game. They discuss Dungeons and Dragons to illustrate changes that are made to a RPG game that would want someone to buy the latest edition. Important changes to game mechanics, art direction, diversity in subjects and other changes to the game.
Shadowrun is another game they use as an example of why people would want to get the latest edition. Shadowrun is not so much about rules changes, though their are a quite a few, for Saul the new edition was needed to incorporate changes in technology where real life had out paced what was imagined by the games creators in the 1980's.
